What Is Humidity and Why Does It Matter?

Humidity describes water vapor in the air. Relative humidity compares the amount of water vapor present with the maximum the air could hold at that temperature.

Relative humidity in simple terms

Warm air can hold more water vapor than cool air. A relative humidity of 80% does not mean the air is 80% water; it means the air is holding about 80% of the water vapor it could hold at that temperature.

Humidity and comfort

High humidity can make warm conditions feel heavier because sweat evaporates more slowly. Low humidity can feel dry, especially when air is cool or indoor heating is running.

Humidity does not guarantee rain

Rain depends on atmospheric lifting, cooling, clouds, and other processes. High humidity may provide moisture, but it does not by itself tell you that rain will occur.

What this means for your day

Use humidity with temperature, wind, clouds, and precipitation probability. It is a comfort clue, not a standalone rain forecast.
